10th World Water Forum in Bali Aims for Global Climate Action
The Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency of Indonesia (BMKG) remains optimistic that the 10th World Water Forum (WWF) in Bali will inspire leaders to commit politically to tackling the urgent climate crisis and climate change challenges.
The event will take place from May 18 to May 25, 2024.
In a recent online seminar, BMKG's chief, Dwikorita Karnawati, reported that global climate organizations have found weather and climate patterns to be currently erratic, primarily due to the ongoing high levels of CO2 emissions.
This climate unpredictability could trigger severe weather events, such as droughts and excessive rainfall, potentially worsening social and public health situations and affecting countries' economic stability.
"This critical issue forms a central agenda for the WWF in Bali, as most nations are feeling the impacts of climate change, necessitating the preservation of water resources for the public good," Karnawati explained.
She also mentioned that the forum seeks to secure a political commitment from 30 participating countries to adopt measures to address potential climate crises.
Participants expect this commitment to be a key outcome of the forum, demonstrating their collective determination to implement science-based strategies that reflect their respective countries' natural and ecological conditions, Karnawati added.
She emphasized that a definitive action plan would tackle climate change and help bridge the gap between countries with different capacities to manage resources related to water, climate, food, energy, and health.
"Each country has unique capabilities in managing these issues. A significant knowledge and technology gap complicates these challenges further. We can now overcome this by collaborating to confront the climate crisis," she declared.
The 10th World Water Forum carries the theme "Water for Shared Prosperity" and includes six sub-themes:
- Water for humans and nature
- Water security and prosperity
- Disaster risk reduction and mitigation
- Governance cooperation and hydro diplomacy
- Sustainable water finance
- Knowledge and innovation
The forum will also promote dialogue among stakeholders from various regions, including the Mediterranean, Asia-Pacific, America, and Africa, along with World Water Council members, to develop strategies for addressing water-related challenges.
